How We Write and Review Our Guides

Every guide and article on this site is checked against its sources and reviewed by Professor Maycon Carvalho before it goes live. Here’s how.

Professor Maycon Carvalho, founder and head instructor of CJJF Santa Monica, who reviews every guide
In short

We draft with AI assistance, check every fact against the source we cite, and Professor Maycon Carvalho, our founder and head instructor, reviews each guide and article before it’s published. Club details come from the club, and health and legal topics stay general.

How we use AI

We use AI tools to help research and draft our guides. They help us read many sources quickly and lay out a clear answer. They don’t decide what’s true: people check every fact against the source we cite, and anything we can’t confirm is cut.

AI never writes reviews, quotes or competition results, and none of our photos of people are AI-generated. Our photos show our own academy, coaches and students; our diagrams and infographics are drawn by us.

Who reviews each guide

Professor Maycon Carvalho, our founder and head instructor and a 5th-degree black belt, reads every guide and article before it goes live, for accuracy and for how we teach at CJJF. That’s what “Reviewed by Professor Maycon Carvalho” at the top of a guide means.

Where our facts come from

  • Health and safety: public health bodies and medical centers, such as the CDC, the Mayo Clinic and the American College of Sports Medicine.
  • Rules and belts: the IBJJF’s own rule book and documents, cited by edition and article.
  • The law: California’s own codes and jury instructions, as general information.
  • Studies: peer-reviewed research, linked by its DOI, with what each study did and didn’t test.
  • Prices and industry figures: credited to whoever published them, as estimates.

We link each source where the claim is made and list them all at the end of the page. We don’t repeat statistics we can’t trace to a source.

Facts about the club

Class times, ages, prices and policies come from the club and are updated when they change. When something is our own practice rather than a rule of the sport, we say so: “At CJJF, …”.

Our guides give general information, not medical or legal advice. Pages that explain the law carry a “Not legal advice” note. For a health question, talk to your doctor, or your child’s doctor.

Reviews and quotes

We quote real reviews of the club word for word and say where they come from. We never invent reviews, quotes or testimonials.

The Ask AI box

Our guides offer to open your own AI assistant with a question about the page. “See exactly what we send” shows the full text: it asks the AI to use the page and to ask about your situation first, and never asks it to recommend or remember us. What you write there stays between you and that service.

Updates and corrections

Each guide shows the month it was last updated. We re-check pages against their sources and update them when the facts change; the date changes only when the page does. Spotted a mistake? Email mcbjjsantamonica@gmail.com and we’ll fix it.

We don’t accept payment to mention products or other gyms, and there are no affiliate links. We link to gear brands only where their own guides answer a question best, such as sizing or washing a gi.
